pobrane (2)

In Poland, the first weekend of May is traditionally known as the “long weekend”, as it falls around two working free days: May 1 – May Day (St. Joseph of the Worker’s) and May 3, a Polish national holiday commemorating the signing of the Constitution of May 3 in 1791.

And what’s all about?

1st of May used to be an Official Labour Day and – during communism – it was one of the most important national day during the year. Nowadays we call it like “State Holiday” and it is stil a Bank Holiday in Poland.

On May 3, 1791, the Constitution of the Polish-Lithuanian Commonwealth was adopted. It was the first constitution of modern Europe and second in the world, following the American one. It was a significant achievement of the Polish Enlightenment thinkers.
