19 of June  – 22 of June 2014 is a long weekend in Poland. Why next long weekend, after previuos in May? Because 19th of June is a religious holiday in Poland, Corpus Christi, which falls close to weekend. Many people use this opportunity to take a short break from work.

Corpus Christi is a moveable feast, celebrated on the Thursday after Trinity Sunday or, in countries where it is not a holy day of obligation, on the following Sunday. In Poland by tradition, Catholics take part in a procession through the streets of a neighborhood near their parish following mass and pray and sing. The Eucharist, known as the Blessed Sacrament, is placed in a monstrance and is held aloft by a member of the clergy during the procession. After the procession, parishioners return to the church where benediction usually takes place. It is very colorful and ceremonial event, which you can observe in every city or village where the church is.

Every year in Kraków is organised huge procession through Royal Route which starts on Wawel Cathedral, goes by Grodzka Street and ends on Main Market Square.

What to do during long weekend?

People in Poland usually choose option of taking a break from routine life and plan short trips, for example to the mountains, near the lake or a river. The weather in June is mostly great: warm and sunny, so it is a perfect time to organise some parties with friends, campfires, grills or spend time in active way.

What to do in Kraków?

On the first day of long weekend museums, tourist attractions and most popular tourist destinations like Auschwitz and Salt Mine are closed, as well as shopping malls and other stores, so better be prepared for it. Some restaurants and bars on the Main Market Square and on Jewish District works normally.

But, on Friday, Saturday and Sunday you can fully enjoy the cultural infrastructure of city and precincts.
